Don, I should have clarified the ad in question was clearly stated to have been paid for by the signatories in their private capacirities so all the taxpayer talk is irrelevant.

You rightly point out that this country suffers from inequality. Yes, research into the xenophobic violence found inequality to be at the root of it and some researchers went as far as saying had it not been manifested in violence towards foreigners it may well have been reared its head as racial or ethnic clashes. But can you blame Mbeki for that? Zuma can hardly change any of it since he's backed by a couple of the people who have benifitted most from economic policies designed to empower the previously advantaged such that they now count themselves as billionaires. Would Zuma scupper their interests?

South Africa, so enadearingly labelled the 'powerhouse of Africa' by the powers that be in these Mugabean times, is said to be protected by the most liberal constitution in the world. Same-sex marriages were officially mooted a few years ago down here. Now I'm a Muslim, a conservative one at that (without being a terrorist), and I'm also South African. My community was recently catapulted into the throes of this dichotomy,when rumuors abounded that a prominent businessman and a televsion personality had committed themselves to a "gay Muslim marriage", a nikaah, and were already enjoying their honeymoon in Spain. While the rumour remains to be substantiated, or rubbished, it remained for the community to reconcile a Muslim identity to a South African one. How is that achieved?

The irony of a democracy, is that it inherently must protect the rights of minorities. Make no mistake, in my personal capacity, I am as opposed to homosexuality as you are, the bill of rights, affords me the right to that opinion and the right to the freedom of its expression, but it also affords rights to homosexuals. It's a secular democracy.

Uganda has yet to legislate homosexual marriages and during a recent Aids conference in Kampla I read of a group of advocates for homosexuality who caused some chaos by gatecrashing the conference. Do you think Uganda will soon be allowing same-sex marriages?

I agree Don. Tsvagarai has not only commited political suicide, he has commited the state of Zimbabwe to a certain death.

Tsvangarai had to show the moral strength, required of a true leader, to raise above Mugabe's tactics. If anything Mugabe's ways should have lured more voters to the MDC camp had they stood strong and honorably. That is what Africa needs, leaders who do not resort to the sort of disgusting behaviour that comes with an imminent change of guard, that indeed we witness all too often, but who are also, strong enough to combat that behaviour without resorting to it themselves. I cannot help but wonder if Tsvangarai has failed a test of his leadership accumen here..

I agree with Mbeki (and I also think you are harsh on him), what remains is Zimbabwe, where to from here?

But that said, there is an admission by all those guys that many things are still wanting. That now brings us to what the press should do: gloat and gloss over the meagre positives or hype a great deal about the flaws, with the hope that this can change things---I again, leave that in your court
